The Nairobi second-hand iPhone market is booming — and so is the market for fakes, refurbished-but-not-disclosed units, stolen devices, and phones with hidden battery problems. We've seen too many customers walk into our Kimathi House shop looking heartbroken, holding a phone they paid full price for that turned out to be a dud.
This guide is the exact checklist we use at Naicomm Online when we certify a pre-loved iPhone. Go through these seven steps before paying for any used iPhone in Kenya. If the seller refuses to let you check any one of them, walk away.
Step 1: Verify the IMEI — The Most Important Check
The IMEI is the phone's unique fingerprint. Every genuine iPhone has one, and you can verify it in three places:
- Dial *#06# on the phone — the IMEI pops up on screen
- Go to Settings → General → About — scroll down to find IMEI and Serial Number
- Check the IMEI printed on the original box (if available)
All three numbers must match. If they don't, the phone has been tampered with — walk away.
Next, take that IMEI and check it on Apple's official site: checkcoverage.apple.com. Enter the IMEI or serial number. A genuine iPhone will return its exact model, warranty status, and country of origin. If the site says "We're sorry, but this serial number is not valid" — it's a fake.
Pro tip: Also run the IMEI through imei.info or a similar free checker. This flags whether the phone has been reported stolen or blacklisted on any network globally.
Step 2: Check the Battery Health
This is the single biggest determinant of whether a pre-loved iPhone is worth the asking price. Apple makes it easy — you don't need any special software.
Go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. You'll see two numbers:
- Maximum Capacity: This should be 80% or higher for a used iPhone you're paying decent money for. Anything below 80% means the battery is already due for replacement.
- Peak Performance Capability: This should say 'Your battery is currently supporting normal peak performance.' If it mentions throttling or unexpected shutdowns, the phone will slow down under load.
At Naicomm, we disclose battery health on every pre-loved iPhone — written on the price tag and verbally before the sale. Any honest seller should do the same.
Step 3: Inspect for Signs of Tampering or Refurbishment
Some sellers pass off refurbished iPhones as "original condition." Here's how to spot the difference:
- Look closely at the gap between the screen and the frame — it should be perfectly even all the way around. Uneven gaps mean the screen has been opened.
- Check the two bottom screws (next to the charging port). If they're scratched, stripped, or look like cheap replacements, the phone has been apart.
- Look at the camera lens — original Apple lenses have a slight purple/blue tint in bright light. Aftermarket lenses look grey or green.
- Original Apple logos are laser-etched, not printed. Run your nail lightly over it — you shouldn't feel a raised surface or detect any colour rub-off.
- Check the SIM tray — it should fit flush and perfectly snug. Wobbly trays often indicate housing swaps.
Step 4: Test All the Features
Don't just check that it powers on. Actually test everything before paying:
- Make a test call (check the earpiece and microphone)
- Record a voice memo (bottom microphone)
- Take a photo with the main camera, zoom in, and check for blur
- Take a selfie and record a video (test the front camera)
- Check both speakers by playing music
- Test Wi-Fi by connecting to a network
- Test Bluetooth by pairing with headphones or another phone
- Test Face ID or Touch ID (set it up if possible)
- Test the flashlight, vibration motor, and all physical buttons
- Plug in a charger and confirm it charges normally
On an iPhone with Dynamic Island or notch, make sure Face ID works. A dead Face ID module is expensive to repair and is a common issue with flood-damaged or dropped units.
Step 5: Confirm It's Not iCloud Locked
An iCloud-locked iPhone is essentially a brick. If the previous owner's Apple ID is still signed in and they haven't signed out, you cannot use the phone as your own. No amount of resetting fixes this — only the original owner can unlock it.
Before paying, ask the seller to: Go to Settings → [their name at top] → Sign Out → Enter their Apple ID password and confirm the sign-out → Then go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings.
After the reset, the phone should boot to the "Hello" setup screen. If it asks for a previous owner's Apple ID — that's iCloud lock. Walk away immediately.
Step 6: Ask for Proof of Purchase and Warranty
A genuine seller of a pre-loved iPhone should be able to tell you:
- Where the phone was originally bought (and ideally show you a receipt or box)
- How long they've owned it
- Whether it has ever been repaired, and if so, where
- What warranty they are offering on the sale (30 days is reasonable for honest sellers)
If the seller cannot answer basic questions about the phone's history, that's a red flag. Stolen iPhones often change hands quickly and the "seller" has no real story to tell.
Step 7: Pay Safely — Never Over M-Pesa to a Personal Pochi
This is how Nairobi iPhone scams usually work: you agree on a price, the seller asks you to send M-Pesa to a personal Pochi La Biashara number, you send the money, then they either disappear or hand you a fake.
Always pay using one of these safer methods:
- M-Pesa Buy Goods to a registered business till number (the till name should match a real registered shop)
- Cash in person at a physical shop you can return to if something goes wrong
- A reputable escrow service for high-value purchases above KSh 100,000
Never pay the full amount before seeing the phone in person, especially for deals that feel "too good to be true." They usually are.
